With the reality of COVID wedding postponements, we’ve had several brides asking questions about how to keep their dresses in the best shape possible while they wait a little longer for their big day to arrive.

We’ve compiled a list of tips to help keep your dress looking pristine so you can shine bright like a diamond when walking down the aisle, and feel stress-free about your dress leading up to your wedding. (NOTE: these are also great tips for post-wedding dress preservation!)

  1. Bag is best!

When you pick up your dress at TMB, we provide you with a fabric garment bag to store your dress in. These bags are a breathable cloth material and are safe to keep your dress in for extended periods of time. Don’t cover your dress in any sort of plastic garment bag, as it prevents the gown from breathing.

  2. Store in a cool, dry, dark place

Wedding dresses are happiest when stored away from direct sunlight and humidity. Hang your dress in a temperature controlled, dark place free of moisture for it to be at its best.

  3. Hang tags are your best friend

Most wedding dresses come with hanger tags sewn into the inside of the gown. They are typically sewn near the armpit area, and under the train. These are super important to utilize when storing your gown, as straps can stretch over time if a dress is particularly heavy. Pop the hang tags on your hanger, and make sure the weight is evenly distributed. We recommend keep your dress on the hanger we provided.

  4. Let her breathe!

Try not to cram your dress into a full closet or wardrobe, give her some space to limit creasing and avoid squishing her.

  5. Resist the Urge to take it out

We know your dress is the most beautiful thing ever, but to keep her looking that way for your wedding, try to avoid taking her out and trying her on (unless you’re going for alterations). If you do need to touch your dress, make sure your hands are freshly washed and clean, as the oils from our hands or lingering foundation on our fingers can leave marks!

  6. Before the Big Day

We steam all dresses at TMB before they are picked up by brides, but if you’re storing your dress for several months certain areas of your dress might need a touch-up. You can either have your dress professionally steamed just before your wedding, or go over it yourself if you have an at-home steamer to get out any wrinkles that may have occurred.
