How did you start in the brewing business? What's the story there?

Our interest in beer, like many, started in highschool. We started experimenting with home brewing beer, as it was easier than buying beer at the time (the whole underage thing). After doing some school projects on the brewing industry (we’re twins so we were in many of the same classes) we decided to try to open a brewery of our own. After highschool we diversified our education, one of us took brewing and the other took business, we each got some experience working at different breweries (Sleemans, Muskoka, Sawdust City, Niagara Teaching Brewery), and finally launched Brothers Brewing Company in 2014. We operated as a contract brewery, renting production space at other breweries, until we opened our bricks and mortar location in Guelph in June 2017.

What is the process behind brewing the TMB signature beer? How did you end up choosing it's particular flavour combinations? (what makes it sparkle)

The first thought when brainstorming ideas for a TMB beer was that it should sparkle. We had seen some glitter beers online and couldn’t resist the idea of working it into the recipes. Apart from being sparkly, we wanted something that would set it apart from the other glitter beers we had seen and make it uniquely TMB. Somewhere along the line someone had the amazing idea of trying to make it rose gold in colour in addition to sparkly. We achieve this by adding a strawberry rhubarb purée mixed with edible glitter (used in cake making) to the beer after it has finished the fermentation process. This leaves us with a glittery, rose gold beer with a very delicate strawberry rhubarb nose and flavour.

When you're designing labels for new brews, where do you get your ideas?

Inspiration for our different labels and beer names comes from literally everywhere; it’s definitely something we are always either consciously or subconsciously thinking about. The obvious inspiration for this design came from the front of the building. The building itself is stunning, which I think is the largest reason why we have all chosen to locate our businesses here. As iconic as the facade of the building has been by itself, the addition of dresses in the windows overlooking downtown Guelph has definitely complimented the aesthetic and added something uniquely iconic and representative of TMB. It only felt appropriate to have this iconic view, familiar to anyone who has stepped foot downtown Guelph, as the label for the TMB brew.
