By: Tanja Helmer

1. You’re the boss

It’s appointment day! We can’t wait for you to walk through our door and introduce yourself, and the amazing people you decided to bring along with you. We love a good support system and opinions can be extremely helpful when making a tough decision. All we want you to remember is at the end of the day, you get to wear the gown and the ultimate decision comes down to what makes you feel like the fabulous bride you know you are! Today is your day and your happiness is what matter most to us. So, stay true to who you are and what you imagine yourself looking like on your magical day!

modernbride006.jpg

2. You can tell us anything

Take pride in that carefully crafted and finely curated Pinterest board or photo album that you have been creating and Show. It. Off. We want to see what you have been imagining so that we can help you navigate our curated Dress Loft.

Not your first time shopping? Tell us what you have loved so far, if there is something we want to stray away from, and most importantly if there is another gown out there we are trying to top!

3. Talk to us about what you’re thinking throughout your appointment

We, here at TMB, vow to listen to all feedback provided by you throughout the entirety of your appointment, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, and as long as we both shall live (or at least until we find your gown) … so don’t hold back and tell us what you’re thinking! Let us know what you are liking, what you are loving, and what you think you might be missing in each dress you try on. This will help us narrow down our selection and bring you a step closer to finding your gown!

4. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone - but not too far

When choosing your selections from the dress loft, don’t be afraid to try things that might be a little out of your comfort zone, whether it be different style, neckline or detailing. You might find yourself surprised and loving something you weren’t sure about at first! Stepping out of your comfort zone can have its rewards as long as you feel you aren’t changing who you are. Our best advice is to stick with the one that you feel most like your gorgeous self in! Find the one that makes you feel like a glammed-up version of yourself so that when you look in the mirror you recognize the stunner staring back at you, but don’t want to look away because she is looking GOOD!!

5. We want you to ask questions - all of them!

Feel free to pick our brains during your appointment and ask us anything! Have a question about current trends, different designers, customization options, what’s for dinner? No topic is off limits and we are happy to chat about whatever comes to mind before, throughout and even after your appointment.

6. Saying “yes” can be a different experience for everyone

So, you found your dress and felt like you just said yes to buying another pair of shoes you probably already owned; maybe you couldn’t bring yourself to shed one single tear; or maybe you and your gal gang had to use our entire box of tissues while out of nowhere emerged a string quartet to play the very song you chose to walk down the aisle to. This is why we love our brides! Everyone is different, wonderfully unique and has their own experience when celebrating finding their dress. You don’t have to have that “I’m saying yes to this dress” moment. We are extremely excited for you no matter what and can’t wait to see you walk down the aisle in it!

7. We love our jobs, and it’s all because of you

Being surrounded by gorgeous gowns in a dreamy space is definitely a perk, but what makes us love our jobs the most is…you! We love getting to know each and every one of our TMB babes and what makes you unique! We are SO lucky we get to be apart of this process and we always have fun sharing this special experience with you and your friends and families. We can’t thank you enough for making our jobs so special!

NOW we can pop the champagne - Cheers Babes!

Let’s start off with getting to know exactly who Hayley is! Tell us three things most people don’t know about you!

  1. I'm a huge movie buff, it's actually what I went to school for.

  2. I'm obsessed with my cat, Trevor. He is my son and I love him.

  3. I have traveled to Egypt and went into pyramids.

Ok, so now into the nitty gritty of your favourite bridal details! If you were to get married tomorrow, what dress from the TMB Dress Loft would you rock down the aisle?

Dylan by Alexandra Grecco; hands down! I didn’t even need to think of that. The first time I saw it, well let’s just say it was love at first sight, with the sleeves, the plunge, the applique, all of it!

What is your current favourite bridal accessory trend?

Big statement earrings! My personal favourites are Magnolia Drop Earring from a.b. Ellie!

What about your favourite bridal gown trend you’ve seen in 2019?

I’m really digging alternative laces and long sleeves and of course, a plunging v-neck!

When you are a guest, what is your absolute favourite wedding moment?

The father/daughter dance. I could honestly not even know the father or the daughter and I would still cry. It is just such a special moment, I cry every time.

You are a bridal consultant extraordinaire (honestly, we’re not joking… read the Google Reviews about Hayley)! What is your favourite part of a bridal appointment?

There is no better moment than when the bride says YAS and everyone gets to celebrate with champagne!

Why do you love working at TMB?

Working at TMB is amazing for so many reasons. It really does feel like such an honour to be a part of all of our brides journey's to find the gown of their dreams. It's great making connections with brides during their appointments and seeing them through to the wedding date! Obviously working with an incredible team of boss babes everyday is a bonus.

Top 3 Bridal Trends from NYC & Barcelona

April was a world-wind of month traveling from New York City to Barcelona to find the perfect dresses to add to our TMB Dress Loft! We purchased over 50 new gowns; some have already started to arrive and all of them will be here for you by August. We are also introducing two new designers to the TMB Dress Loft: Justin Alexander and Alena Leena. We couldn’t be more excited about our newest additions and we will give you all the details when they arrive!

To get you prepared for the beautiful show-stoppers coming to TMB, we put together a list of the top three trends we saw in NYC and Barcelona!

20190413_142054.JPG

Top 3 Trends from 2019 NYC Spring Bridal Market

  • Sparkles - There was absolutely no shortage of sparkles adorning gowns and accessories! Expect to see delicate sparkle embellishments on sleek silhouettes.

  • Tiered Skirts - An update to the A-line; tiered skirts were everywhere! The tiered skirt gives more movement, texture and volume to your look and well, we cannot wait to see you babes in them!

  • Billow Sleeves - At Market in Fall 2018 we saw bell sleeves all over and this season designers have once again stepped up their sleeve game and are giving us perfectly tailored billow sleeves that have our romantic bride hearts aflutter! Embellishments on the billow sleeves and structured cuffs are coming to TMB!

Now, Barcelona is a whole different bridal ballpark! Valmont Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week is the world’s biggest bridal fashion week bringing together hundreds of global bridal brands to show off their latest works of art. For perspective here, Pronovias displayed 200+ dresses that took us an entire day to walk through and see! Surprise to no one, we wanted them all! But, we successfully chose over 30 new styles from Pronovias and Atelier Pronovias that we know our brides will love!

Top 3 Trends from 2019 Barcelona Fashion Week

  • Black Accents - Brace yourselves ladies, black accents have popped up everywhere and we are here for it! Whether is it a lace detail or full ballgown, black is taking the bridal world by storm and you can absolutely expect to see the dark tone in the TMB Dress Loft!

  • Non-Traditional Lace - Designers are swapping traditional laces for non-traditional graphic details! This twist on tradition paves the way for unique, modern yet timeless gowns that we know our TMB babes are going to fall head over heels for.

  • Sleeves - Sleeves are here and they’re here to stay ladies! It doesn’t matter if you’re having a spring, summer, fall or winter wedding, there is a sleeve for you! Whether you want a romantic lace detailed sleeve or a opaque sleeve, Pronovias has delivered and we can’t wait to show you what we are bringing into the TMB Dress Loft!

All the new dresses are set to arrive by August! Appointment spaces will fill up quickly, so be sure to book your appointment today!

#TMBTEAM: Adele Gatto, Public Relations and Creative Director

Our team at The Modern Bride has grown and we couldn’t be more excited! This is the perfect opportunity to introduce you to all the beautiful babes who make The Modern Bride so successful! Each week we will share some fun facts to highlight one of our #TMBTeam members. Today, we are introducing you to our Public Relations & Creative Director, Adele!

Adele Gatto.jpeg

You’ve been at TMB for over a year and a half now, why do you love working at TMB?

Every day I am surrounded by inspiring, supportive boss ladies where the main goals are to make every bride who walks through our doors know she is absolutely deserving of whatever bridal dream she envisions. Every day here is a Royal Wedding; a modern Royal Wedding, of course!

Ok so now it’s time to talk about your dream wedding! Is it happening in the spring, summer, fall or winter?
Without a doubt it will be a snow-covered, BC mountainscape, winter wedding on New Years Eve, baby!

modernbride064.jpg

So if your NYE wedding was actually tomorrow, what TMB dress would you choose to get married in?

Nico by Alexandra Grecco, with a custom extended train for all the drama!

Veil or No Veil:

This just isn’t even a debate in my opinion: veil! When are you ever going to get the chance to wear a veil again? You’ll find me walking down the aisle in a Meghan-Markle-esque veil; an absolute show stopper from Aleksa Karina or Alice & Mae!

Bridal fashions are always evolving, but what is a 2019 bridal fashion trend you are loving right now?

Higher necklines on dresses! I think there is something so regal and classic about a structured high-neckline.

modernbride120.jpg

As a self proclaimed lover of all things weddings, if you had to pick, what would be your favourite part of the wedding?

Groom’s reaction to bride walking down the aisle; whether it is a grin from ear to ear or, my personal favourite, a groom brought to tears! Call me old-fashioned, but I say skip the ‘first look’ and save the initial emotions for the walk down the aisle.

Finally, what are 3 things people may not know about you?

  1. I'm absolutely petrified of butterflies.

  2. If I didn’t already have my dream job, I’d be a sports reporter.

  3. My half-blind French Bulldog, Gordon Bombay is my world.

#TMBTeam: Alicia Gibson, Boutique Curator

Our team at The Modern Bride has grown and we couldn’t be more excited! This is the perfect opportunity to introduce you to all the beautiful babes who make The Modern Bride so successful! Today, we are introducing you to our detail-oriented and accessory queen Boutique Curator, Alicia Gibson!

Alicia Gibson.jpg

Let’s start with fun facts about you! What are three things people would be surprised to learn about you, Alicia?

modernbride252.jpg
  1. Family is #1 for me, so I always make time for my husband James and our dog Sophie.

  2. I am a long-time watcher of acclaimed BBC series Coronation Street! I’ve been watching it since I was 8 and I am currently reading the 50-year saga to find out how it all began!

  3. I am a big foodie, so my honeymoon was planned around places to eat in Croatia, thanks to the help of Anthony Bourdain.

Now onto the bridal questions! You’ve already tied the knot, but do you prefer a spring/summer/fall or winter wedding?

I have always loved a spring wedding. I even planned my own wedding around the blossoming of the peony!

If you were to renew your vows today, what TMB wedding dress would you pick to walk down the aisle in?

Brigitte by Anais Anette! I love the floral lace, the modern cut along the side seam and that it's Canadian!

What is your favourite part of a bridal appointment?

My favourite part of the bridal appointment is the moment when the bride is standing in the change room in her favourite dress and she is smiling because she knows it's the one!

You are the accessory queen, so it would only be fair to ask what is your favourite bridal accessory?

I can’t choose just one, but my favourite look would be the Alyssa earrings from Joanna Bisley with the Julene hair pins from Olivia the Wolf, and the Delphine veil from Atelier Elise. I love our Canadian designers!

So, it’s fair to say that you prefer veil over no veil?
Veil all the way! Veils elevate the romance.

modernbride235.jpg

Despite seeing the dress, what would you say if you favourite part of a wedding?
Easy answer, the first kiss!

Why do you love working at TMB?
There are many reasons why I love working at TMB! I love being a part of a growing women-driven business and I love how we give back to the community I grew up in. I love the excited brides that come through our doors and I love hearing how we made the experience special for them and their family. I love the team we have established and I think that we all play such a vital role in making the business what it is today. Lastly, I love coming into work and seeing the amazing women that I work with.

Donna Hirst.jpg

After all the amazing bridal appointments you’ve been involved with, what would you say is your favourite part of a bridal appointment?

My favourite part of a bridal appointment is the first time we meet the bride and the people most important to her. It is the start of something magical!

Donna Hirst TMB

When you think of your ultimate dream wedding, is it in spring/summer/fall or winter?

Summer and somewhere by the water!

Are you on board with team veil or are you on team no veil?

I’m going to have to side with team no veil on this one!

Aside from seeing the beautiful dress the bride chose, what would you say if you favourite part of a wedding?

Easy answer, the first kiss!

Why do you love working at TMB?

Being around so many young, exceptionally talented women every day.

Based on current bridal trends, what is your favourite trend modern brides are adopting?

My favourite trend is not just specific to bridal fashion, it is that brides are creating their own traditions; no rules, doing it their way!

To wrap things up, can you let us in on three things you think our TMB brides and followers would be surprised to learn about you?

  1. I practice yoga every morning and just started taking a barre class once a week.

  2. I love to garden. Working outside all day and getting my hands dirty is my idea of a great day off!

  3. I used to have my motorcycle license!

Bonus Donna fun-fact: Donna was the project manager responsible for helping transform our space at the Petrie Building to be the beautiful bridal oasis it is today! Thanks Donna!

TMB in NYC: Top 5 Trends We Saw at NYC Bridal Market

Jess Hirst Alicia Gibson Bridal Market NYC .jpg

We came, we saw, we fell head over heels for all the wedding dresses at 2018 NYC Bridal Market!

If you were following along with our Instagram stories this past weekend, you would have noticed we were a wee-bit excited about everything we saw at 2018 NYC October Bridal Market! We met with amazing designers we currently carry and we were in complete awe of their newest collections. We also met with some new designers who we will be bringing into the boutique and can’t wait to tell you more about.

Before we dish on all the new styles and designers that will be coming to TMB in Spring 2019, we wanted to break down the ‘Top 5 Bridal Trends We Saw in NYC’!

  1.  Unconventional Fabric - Swiss dot, intertwined honeycomb sponge mesh, and bee lace (yes you read that right, literal lace bees on a dress)!

  2. Bell Sleeves – Get ready ladies, flowing sleeves are coming and we just cannot wait for you to fall in love with them as much as we did! The bell sleeves give off a super romantic and fun vibe for your wedding day.

  3. 90’s Necklines – We’re talking crescent necklines and straight across necklines, so think Alicia Silverstone as Clueless’ Cher Horowitz in that infamous red dress or Rachael Lee Cook in She’s All That, ahh gorgeous!

  4. Cut Outs – Cut outs are still very much a thing in bridal and we couldn’t be happier about it; nothing like a little peak-a-boo to modernize your dress!

  5. New Individual Lines – We saw a lot of young entrepreneurial women who are shaping the future of bridal! We’re predicting that the bridal world is on a shift from a big box wedding dress production to individually-inspired dress designs with young entrepreneurial woman at the helm of their very own lines.

That’s it for now babes, but stay tuned for a complete vlog recap of our NYC trip! #TMBinNYC

#TMBTeam: Jessica Hirst, CEO & Founder

Our team at The Modern Bride has grown and we couldn’t be more excited! We decided this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to all the beautiful babes who make The Modern Bride so successful! Each week we will share some fun facts to highlight one of our #TMBTeam members; first up, we have our fierce and fearless, boss-babe founder, Jessica Hirst.

Jess Hirst.jpg

Ok Jess, first things first, would you rather a spring/summer/fall or winter wedding?

Such a hard choice; I always seem to have a chill so I’m partial to summer, BUT I have to say winter wedding, for the sleeves!

If you got married today, what current TMB dress would you wear?

Colonia - Atelier Pronovias! I love the neckline and sultry cutouts paired with the classic sleekness of the completely plain crepe.

donna jess.jpg

What is your opinion on the highly-debated bridal topic: Veil or No Veil?

Veil! Always a veil! More specifically, a soft blusher and cathedral length veil. When are you ever going to get away with wearing a veil again?!

Out of all the current wedding dress trends, what is your favourite?

Peek-a-boo cutouts and slits!

What is your absolute favourite part of a wedding?

The first look! I have seen A LOT of weddings, but I have to say that the first look still gets me choked up. Also, any tears on the groom’s part absolutely slays me.

group.jpg

Most important, why do you love working at TMB?

TMB is something that I never imagined, but I can't imagine my life without it now! The women who currently make up TMB have truly (and almost literally) helped lay the foundation for who we are, and I am so proud. Each staff member who has joined us has become family and together I don't think there is anything that we can't accomplish. Corny, I know, but spend one appointment here and you’ll get it. These girls really make this place something to be proud of!

Now for the fun of it, what are 3 things people may not know about you?

1.     Pickles (or olives) would be my last meal, hands down.

2.     I can pour a Guinness with a perfect shamrock on top.

3.     I own about a million pairs of shoes, but spend most of the time barefoot.
